B negative (B−) is one of the rarest blood types in Oklahoma, found in only about 2% of the state's population. Despite its rarity, B− red blood cells can be donated to both Rh-positive and Rh-negative B and AB patients — four of the eight blood types. This versatility, combined with scarcity, makes B− donations exceptionally valuable.
For Rh-negative patients with B-type blood, B− is one of only two compatible options (the other being O−). Because Rh-negative patients cannot receive Rh-positive blood without serious immune risk, B− donors provide a critical — and hard-to-replace — resource. Hospitals often run B− shortages precisely because there are so few eligible donors.
B− donors can only receive from B− and O− — two of the rarest types — which further underscores the importance of giving regularly. Oklahoma Blood Institute centers will often specifically reach out to B− donors during shortage periods. If you have B− blood, your commitment to regular donation directly determines whether B-negative patients receive compatible blood in time.
